A Fistful of Soul

A Fistful of Soul (AFOS) has been Houston's premiere monthly soul dance party for 6 years and counting. AFOS is hosted by a trio of all-vinyl deejays—Stewart Anderson, Joe Ross, and Alex LaRotta. For the past six years, AFOS has built a core audience of devoted dancers and soul music lovers from all over the city. It is currently the biggest soul dance party in Texas, and one of the biggest of its kind in the country with an average of 500+ attendees. AFOS recently won“Best DJ Night” at the Houston Press Music Awards, voted by their supporters, and readers of the Houston Press.

While AFOS spins everything from Latin boogaloo to Motown hits, they remain true to their focus on Houston-based R&B and soul. Some of their “must-spins” include Archie Bell & The Drells’ immortal H-town classic, “Tighten Up,” The Four Tops’ “7 Rooms of Gloom,” Gloria Jones’ “Tainted Love” Barbara Lynn’s “I’m a Good Woman.”  with hits and rare jams that go on and on.  Check out Fistful of Soul every third Friday at Shoeshine Charley’s Big Top on Main, which as always FREE. Sharp dress encouraged.
